IKEA: separating sales, savings and training

Ingka reported EUR 1.3 billion in remote-channel sales at the end of FY22. The same announcement attributed nearly EUR 13 million in savings to Billie between 2021 and 2023. These are different metrics: sales are not net profit and the entire remote channel cannot be attributed to the chatbot.

The applicable lesson is to combine enquiry automation with changes to work organization. A small business should identify questions that authorized sources can answer, define escalation and measure quality and cost. A large-company case cannot promise the same result elsewhere.

Assessing an application for your business

Before implementation, define a specific task, authorized sources and a responsible person. Compare results with the current process and record time, quality, errors and total cost. Start with a bounded test, review exceptions and agree when a person must intervene. Scope and timelines depend on available data, integrations and permissions.

Designing a useful test

Choose representative examples, include difficult cases and define what happens when information is insufficient. Keep a manual process for exceptions. Measure before and after using the same task definition and comparable periods; do not attribute all changes to the model when the process also changed.
