Chatbots and agents: choosing for the need

A chatbot can answer questions; an agent can use tools to perform a sequence of actions. There is no universal replacement: the choice depends on the process, permissions and the risk of acting.

Planning a first application

  1. For frequent questions, test answers with authorized sources.
  2. For actions, define tools, inputs and approval.
  3. For ambiguous cases, provide human escalation.

What to check before deciding

Compare correct tasks, end-to-end time, review and cost. A rule-based workflow may suffice for a stable process. A technology label does not prove that it solves the need better.
